Early Beginnings: The origins of International Women’s Day can be traced back to the early 20th century. In 1908, 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter hours, better pay, and voting rights. This event served as a catalyst for future movements advocating for women’s rights.
Clara Zetkin’s Proposal: In 1910, at the International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen, Clara Zetkin, a German Marxist, proposed the idea of an International Women’s Day. Her proposal aimed to highlight the struggles of working-class women and to promote equal rights and suffrage for women worldwide. The proposal was met with unanimous approval, leading to the establishment of International Women’s Day.
First Celebration: The first International Women’s Day was observed on March 19, 1911, in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland. More than one million men and women attended rallies campaigning for women’s rights to work, vote, and hold public office.
Suffrage Movements: Throughout the early 20th century, International Women’s Day became closely associated with suffrage movements across the globe. Russian Revolution: In 1917, International Women’s Day took on a revolutionary significance in Russia. On March 8th (February 23rd in the Julian calendar then used in Russia), women textile workers in Petrograd led a strike, demanding bread and peace, which escalated into a mass protest against the Tsarist regime. This event catalyzed the Russian Revolution and eventually led to the establishment of Soviet Russia.
United Nations Recognition: In 1977, the United Nations officially recognized March 8th as International Women’s Day, commemorating the contributions of women to global peace and development.
