The Liquid Land

Malaysia was once the largest producer of tin in the world. By highlighting concepts of deconstruction and reconstruction, Cheryl Hoffmann and Mark Morris explore how remnants of the tin industry continue to shape the physicality of urban environments while perpetuating historical patterns in the national psyche.

Metal is used as a dominant curation element. Images of reclaimed mining landscapes and sacred pewter talismans reflect the relationship of Chinese miners and Malay landowners to the seemingly magical power of tin as a catalyst for prosperity.
