About Turning Red: Now Streaming on Disney Plus! Turning RED is the story of a Chinese-Canadian Teen seen from a quirky lens! The movie features multiculturalism, friendship, mother-daughter relationship, temple, ancestors, Chinese culture, and food. Animating Toronto’s Chinatown, the TTC, and the CN Tower! From details of Chinese culture to multiculturalism to architecture, you will see it encapsulated in the movie for TORONTO, one of the most diverse cities in the world!
From the lens of Chinese culture, you will see how a Chinese teen growing up in Toronto tried to fit in family values between friendships, all-time-favorite Chinese food like spring onion pancakes and dumplings are served in the Chinese family, and how Chinese beliefs are passed on from one generation to another, animated in all its glory.
“We’re very proud to see Chinese Culture and Canadian Multiculturalism represented in the movie and would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Domee Shi and team for this successful movie and wish for many more movies from her in the future!” said Alan Lam, the chairman of Chinese Cultural Center of Greater Toronto. This screening is supported by our “EDUCATIONAL” “育“ initiative, one of the cultural values that represent the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto. The screening initiative aims to give kids without access to Disney+ at home a chance to explore Chinese culture and the ethnocultural diversity of Canada.
About “EDUCATIONAL” “育“ Value: 老吾老以及人之老,幼吾幼以及人之幼 — Respect our elders and others, Educate and raise our own children and others. Per the meaning of the idiom, part of our mission is to educate and nurture the younger generation with cultural educational programs and initiatives. In addition to our Younger Leadership and Let’s Grow Program, we are adding the cultural day to the list this year! Promoting cross-generational connections to multiculturalism via education.
