Dr. Ming-Tat Cheung

Dr. Ming Tat Cheung has been a clinical cardiologist for over 30 years. His past professional involvements include: Council member of the Ontario Medical Association; President of the Clinical Society and Chief of Cardiology and Internal Medicine at Humber Memorial Hospital; and a Lecturer at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Medicine.

Dr. Cheung has been heavily involved in community volunteer work for over 30 years. He led the community to build the largest Chinese Cultural Centre in North America. He has been the Chairman and President of the Centre since its inception in 1989. He was the founding president of the Federation of Chinese Canadian Professionals (Ont.). He was the president of Canadian Multicultural Council, Asian in Ontario.

Dr. Cheung chaired the Community Coalition Concerned about SARS, a coalition of over 60 community groups joined together to assist victims, fight stigmatization and discrimination and raise funds for SARS research during the SARS outbreak of 2003. He organized and chaired numerous fundraising functions including Asian Tsunamis and South Asian earthquakes in 2005; Sichuan’s Wenchuan Earthquake Relief in 2008; Taiwan Flood in 2009; Haiti Earthquake, China Gansu mud slide and Pakistan Flood relief efforts in 2010; and Japanese Tsunami relief in 2011. Dr. Cheung has been appointed the chair of the “Panda Acquisition Task Force” of the Toronto Zoo. He successfully helped to secure a pair of Giant Pandas to be loaned to the Toronto Zoo and Calgary Zoo from China. The transferring of the giant pandas is an indication of continuous everlasting friendship between the two countries. He has been a member of the AGO Board of Trustees for four years.

張博士在社區志願工作中投入了超過30年的時間。他帶領社區兴建了北美最大的華人文化中心。自1989年創立以來,他一直擔任該中心的主席和總裁。他曾是加拿大華人專業人士聯合會(安大略分會)的創始會長,並擔任加拿大多元文化委員會(安大略亞裔分會)主席。

張博士主持了“關注非典病的社區聯盟”,該聯盟由60多個社區團體聯合組成,旨在協助受害者、反對污名化和歧視,並為2003年非典疫情期間的非典病研究籌集資金。他組織並主持了眾多籌款活動,包括2005年的亞洲海嘯和南亞地震;2008年四川汶川地震救援;2009年台灣洪災;2010年海地地震、中國甘肅泥石流和巴基斯坦洪災救援;以及2011年的日本海嘯救援。張博士被任命為多倫多動物園“熊貓採購特別工作組”的主席。他成功協助確保從中國租借了一對大熊貓供多倫多動物園和卡爾加里動物園使用。這一大熊貓的轉移是兩國之間持續友誼的象徵。他曾是多倫多藝術博物館董事會的成員,任職四年。
